Courses

Time Requirements

ECSpeRT strives to provide continous access to emergency medical care on campus. To ensure adequate coverage, we schedule members for on-call, overnight and event shifts. Our ongoing training sessions maintain our excellence.

On-Call Shifts

On-call hours are 8AM-10PM Monday-Friday. Availability can be provided in blocks allowing shifts that fit your schedule! During on-call, you must be in proper uniform and remain in the ECSpeRT office. While waiting for a call-for-service, you are free to study, socialize, play board games, eat a meal, or practice first aid skills. You just need to be able to drop everything you’re doing if someone needs help.

Overnight Shifts

Overnight shifts are 10PM-8AM Monday-Friday. You spend the night in the ECSpeRT office, with the rest of the team. We have plenty of space to sleep including cots and reclining sofas. Similar to on-call, if the phone rings, we must be ready to respond. While you do have to provide one night of availability each month, you will not be scheduled for one every month.

Event Shifts

We cover events during the week, on weekends, and during the summer. While covering the event, you will be on-site and not in the ECSpeRT office. They can be both on or off campus, however transportation is always arranged. Additionally, being a division of St. John Ambulance, our members can volunteer and help cover events with other divisions. Previous events we helped cover were: Pan American Games, Boots and Hearts, variety of festivals and much more.

Training Sessions

To maintain St. John Ambulance’s perstigeous standard,  ECSpeRT has bi-weekly training sessions for all members. These are 3-hour long mandatory sessions with both in-person and online component. Each session offers a review of both theoretical and practical first aid skills. Some topics covered are assessments, cardiovascular emergencies, trauma, resuscitation, musculoskeletal injuries, and many more.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you require more information, please contact us.

What is the required uniform?

ECSpeRT is a division of St. John Ambulance, an international organization. We therefore have a strict, professional dress code. As an Standard First Aider, you are required to wear an issued t-shirt (tucked in), black dress pants with pockets, a black belt, black shoes (without visible logos and no heels), black socks and a wrist watch. We accept and encourage wearing of religious headwear, however we require that they are solid white or black in colour and do not contain logos.

How do I get my Standard First Aid with St. John Ambulance?

ECSpeRT does offer courses on-campus annually, around the time of recruiting, check out the courses page. We can also help you find a course off campus near you that fits your schedule. To join the team, your SFA certification must be with St. John Ambulance. Unfortunately, certifications with other organizations like Red Cross and Life Saving Society are not accepted. If you want to be informed of upcoming courses, join our Interest List.

How do I Become an Medical First Responder?

The MFR course is competitive and challenging. Therefore, the Executive Council will select Standard First Aiders to participate in the course based on their dedication and skill level. Before admission, Standard First Aiders will be required to complete written and practical tests. These results, as well as dedication level, will be deciding factors during admission selection. The course is taught by certified St. John Ambulance Instructors. It is 40 hours and requires successful completion of multiple written and practical tests. To help members through it, we assign each student a mentor with experience.

Is ECSpeRT CCR approved?

We are excited to be recognized on the Co-Curriculum Record. There are multiple criteria required by each of our members prior to receiving CCR approval. This criteria depends on your position on the team. Full instructions are made available to our members.
