Using an AED

Learn the basics of using AED from our Training team.

The AED used in this video is identical to the model found on campus. Spend the 3 minutes and learn to save a life.
History

When ECSpeRT started in 2001, there were no AEDs at UTM. Over the years through grants and donations, ECSpeRT facilitated the installation of 7 AEDs on campus. In effort to increase safety on campus, we advocated to the university to increase the number of AEDs on campus by presenting a business case to Campus Safety. That business case resulted in UTM purchasing 67 new AEDs! ECSpeRT has registered all of the AEDs with Peel Paramedic’s Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) program, and each month our members perform maintenance checks on the units to ensure they are always ready to function for an emergency.

Importance

According to Heart and Stroke, every minute defibrillation is delayed during a cardiac arrest event, survival of the patient drops 7 to 10%. The average response time for EMS to UTM is 7 minutes.

Your Role

AEDs can be found in every non-academic building and on each floor of all academic buildings. AEDs will soon be installed at every residence building as well! Keep an eye out for them on our map once the installations are complete!

See the map below to familiarize yourself with AED locations on campus.

If you see any missing AEDs without a “maintenance” sign, or if you have any questions, please contact us!
